I approach each design by borrowing traditional forms and techniques from a number of craft disciplines – of different mediums, from different cultural backgrounds – and reinterpret them with a contemporary likeness and appreciation for their original application.

The disciplines that I source range from textiles to metalsmithing to woodworking and paper arts; and the techniques from rug hooking to enamelling to quill work and egg decorating. I am heavily inspired by folk craft: the make-do, free-hand, and self-expressive aesthetic of the untutored craftsperson. It is this practice, and challenge, of making with limitations as to materials, tools, and techniques that I try to emulate in my own designs and is why, despite modern day conveniences when it comes to manufacturing, I prefer celebrating the charming imperfection of the truly handmade as a means of bringing authentic character to every piece I create.

It is the intricate detailing and decorative styling of the craft disciplines themselves that excite me the most, and as such become the subject of my work. In referencing these authentic cultural stylistic qualities, I also hope to celebrate cultural identity for its intrinsic beauty, deeply rooted in history, ritual, and community.
